Abstract
Preserving a historic aircraft involves more than conserving a metal structure: it means safeguarding a unique testimony to the technical, scientific, and cultural history of aviation. Whether displayed outdoors or housed in hangars, these aircraft remain exposed to environmental conditions that can promote corrosion and cause severe, deep-seated structural damage. Aluminium–copper alloys of the 2xxx series, widely used in aircraft construction, are particularly susceptible to such degradation because of their heterogeneous microstructure and the presence of copper-rich intermetallic phases.
