Abstract
Tropical and subtropical forests cover approximately 2.28 billion hectares, accounting for 56% of the total global forest area. They play a crucial role in climate regulation and carbon storage. Unfortunately, between 1990 and 2020, over 90% of observed deforestation affected these ecosystems, equating to around 12.69 million hectares per year. This loss is interlinked to climate change and weather shocks: although forests are a vital tool on the fight against climate change, they also endure its effects.
