Étroitement imbriqué à l'entité urbaine jusqu'au début du XIXe siècle, le port subit une
profonde mutation durant la colonisation française, en particulier à partir de 1870, au moment
où le pouvoir colonial s'enracine durablement en Algérie. Ces changements impactent en
profondeur la morphologie et l'organisation du port d'Alger. L'espace portuaire s'étend par
une artificialisation du rivage et d'importantes emprises spatiales sur la mer, afin d'assumer sa
nouvelle fonction dans le réseau maritime et commercial de la colonie.

Abstract
Closely linked with the urban entity until the beginning of the 19th century, the port
underwent a profound change under french colonial rule, particularly from 1870, when
colonial power took roots in Algeria. The port developed through an artificialization of the
coastline and significant spatial footprints on the sea, in order to assume its new function in
colonial maritime and commercial network.
