Abstract

Permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSMs) play a major role in the electrification of road, air, and maritime transportation. However, their traction inverters are increasingly supplied by non-ideal DC networks. A tightly regulated PMSM drive behaves as a constant power load (CPL), characterized by a negative incremental input impedance. When combined with an LC filter, this property can lead to poorly damped oscillations or even instability of the DC-bus voltage, despite the stability of the motor-side control.
