Authorization to Co-Direct Theses (ACT)

The co-accredited establishments (Université de Lorraine and AgroParisTech) strongly encourage young lecturers, research fellows and research engineers to co-direct theses. The Authorization to Co-Direct a Thesis (ACT) can be granted to a teacher-researcher or a tenured researcher not yet Authorized to Direct Research or to an external personality holding a PhD, chosen because of his or her scientific skills. This ACT allows to exercise an activity of thesis co-direction with a thesis director having a HDR.

The candidate can only benefit from a maximum of three ACTs simultaneously (depending on the date of registration of the PhD student in Apogée) decision taken by the Scientific Council of the University of Lorraine on September 16, 2014. However, in compliance with the above rules, the number of ACTs is not limited in time or in total number during the candidate's career.
Authorization to co-supervision must be requested thesis by thesis during the first year of registration of the doctoral student concerned.

The application is submitted to the doctoral student's registration institution regardless of the institution employing the co-director (University or EPST).
The University of Lorraine's ACT application form is available on the intranet - administrative documents tab - DRV (SDAR-Form). You can also download it from the following links:

Authorization to enroll in the HDR (Habilitation à diriger des recherches)

Lecturers, research fellows and research engineers who have co-directed theses and published their research in international peer-reviewed journals are strongly encouraged to apply for registration at HDR. There is a common procedure for registration at the HDR for all doctoral schools in Lorraine.
The Doctoral school Council examines this file after advice from a reporter outside of the Doctoral School and Université de Lorraine and a reporter appointed by the Director of the Doctoral school. The decision of the Doctoral school is then transmitted to the Scientific Council of the Université de Lorraine.

HDR defenses

The Scientific Council of the Université de Lorraine, during the meetings of December 4th, 2012 and February 15th, 2013, adopted several modalities concerning the defenses of theses and HDR:

- at least one representative of the Université de Lorraine (teacher-researcher or researcher belonging to a research unit of the UL) must be included in the juries for theses and HDRs.

- The defense of a UL HDR must take place on University premises. Any request for a defense outside the UL premises is derogatory and a reasoned request must be systematically transmitted to the attention of the Vice President of the Scientific Council at the Research and Development Department.

- the use of videoconferencing for HDR support must be the subject of a request for exemption addressed to the attention of the Vice-Chairman of the Board of Directors. In case of agreement, the videoconference can only take place with a single destination. In addition, the person(s) involved in the videoconference must be located in higher education or research premises and must be alone in the room. The use of videoconferencing must be mentioned in the defense report, which will also attest to the proper transmission of exchanges throughout the duration of the defense.

- the language of writing and defense of an HDR is French. However, if the candidate is not French-speaking or if the candidate is French-speaking but at least one of the rapporteurs is not French-speaking, the HDR can be written and defended in a foreign language after agreement of the Director of the Doctoral School and the Vice-President of the Scientific Council. In this case, a 5 to 10 page summary in French of the HDR written by the candidate is required and a presentation of five to ten minutes in French must take place during the defense.

- if the sponsor of the HDR candidate does not belong to a research unit of the University of Lorraine, the candidate will have to ask for an exemption to the Vice-President of the Scientific Council.
