About SJPEG Doctoral School

The Legal, Political, Economic and Management Sciences Doctoral School (SJPEG Doctoral School) hosts around 195 of the PhD students of Université de Lorraine in public law, private law, history of law, political science, economics and management sciences, supervised by around a hundred Thesis Supervisors.

The school provides a doctoral training programme combining in-depth discipline-based training (in partnership with research units), methodology and research techniques, assistance in professional integration and multidisciplinary openness (in collaboration with the Lorraine College Board of Doctoral Schools).

It is a member of the Lorraine College Board of Doctoral Schools (CLED), which federates together the eight Doctoral Schools of the Université de Lorraine, bringing together all the disciplines of hard sciences and human and social sciences.

It works in collaboration with the SJPEG Scientific Centre .

Role and functions of the director of the doctoral school

Since January 1st, 2022, the director of the SJPEG doctoral school is Jochen SOHNLE, Professor in public law, assisted by Eve-Angéline LAMBERT, Professor of economic sciences.

Its main missions (in accordance with article 7 of the order of 25 May 2016):

- To implement the ED action programme decided by the ED Council;
- To present each year an activity report to the Research Commission of the Academic Council, or the body that takes its place;
- Propose the allocation of thesis funding;
- To ensure the quality of the supervision of doctoral students, the scientific, material and financial conditions to guarantee the smooth running of the doctoral student's research work and the preparation of the thesis.

You will find in articles 8, 11, 14, 17, 18 of the decree the other attributions of the director of the ED, relating to the registration in thesis and the defense. These are in particular opinions or proposals, made to the Scientific Council or to the President of the University.

In addition, the University of Lorraine has decided to entrust doctoral schools and their directors with a mission of expertise for applications for registration and defence at the HDR (habilitation à diriger des recherches).

The missions

The missions of the Doctoral School Board concern the pedagogical and scientific policy of the ED, in consultation with the laboratories. Its opinions are required in the case of requests for Master's degree exemptions (Article 11 of the Order of 25 May 2016).

Article 9 of the Order of 25 May 2016 states that "The Doctoral School Council shall adopt the Doctoral School's action programme. It manages, through its deliberations, the matters that fall within the remit of the doctoral school".

Since September 2018, the composition of the SJPEG ED Council has been brought into line with article 9 paragraph 2 of the order of 25 May 2016.
