Apply for a thesis
Holders of a “Research” Master's degree or a qualification deemed equivalent.
The list of thesis subjects is published on the website of each research unit (if not, contact their director).
Before enrolling for a PhD, each candidate must submit an application file to the Doctoral School, containing the following: their CV (in particular, the results of their Bachelor’s degree and Master's degree or equivalent), the opinion from the Master's Examination Board, the consent of the Director of the host laboratory with an opinion on the compliance of the thesis subject with the scientific policy of the laboratory, the consent of the Thesis Supervisor constituting his/her commitment to effectively supervise the PhD student and provide him/her with the necessary means to be able to defend the thesis in 3 years . The thesis can be financed by way of a ministerial contract, a doctorate in engineering grant (BDI) awarded by the CNRS, a grant awarded by other research organisations (ADEME, INRA, etc.), a CIFRE grant (whereby part of the funding is provided by a company), a grant from a foreign government (foreign students), etc.
In all cases, candidates’ scientific excellence will prevail. Each PhD student must create their own "PORTFOLIO" for the duration of the thesis.

For registration in 1st year:

Attach to the registration form the doctoral charter, the individual training agreement, the RGPD form (and, if necessary, the request for exemption):
- a proof of funding (1300 euros net/month),
- a letter of motivation signed by the student,
- the letter from the thesis advisor,
- a CV,
- transcripts for the last two years of the last degree obtained (M1 and M2 grades),
- the detailed thesis topic.
File to be sent to the doctoral school and then to the administrative officer. -
For registration in 2nd and 3rd year:

You have to wait for a pass which will be sent to you by e-mail from the administrative officer and which will allow you to register online on the Université de Lorraine website.
This pass is launched by the schools after the laboratories and the doctoral school have given their agreement for the passage to the next year.You will then have to register online via the link below :

Then go to the MDD (My Doc' Door) to update your student ID.

For registration in 4th year:

The registration form, as well as the RGPD form and the registration file are on the site in your account.
Attach a motivated letter from the thesis director announcing the progress of the doctoral student's research and writing work,
who undertakes to have it supported within the year (give a date). The doctoral student may attach a personal letter of motivation.
The summary (thesis outline) or the chapters already written (publication, ...) should also be attached.
The financial situation of the doctoral student (1300 euros net/month) until the submission of his/her thesis must also be specified.File to be sent to the doctoral school and then to the administrative officer.

For registration in 5th year and more:

You will need the registration form, as well as the RGPD form, the registration file that are on the site in your account,
Attach a motivated letter from the thesis director announcing the progress of the doctoral student's research and writing work,
who undertakes to have it supported within the year (give a date). The doctoral student must attach a personal letter of motivation.
The summary (thesis outline) or the chapters already written (publication, ...) must also be attached.
The financial situation of the doctoral student (1300 euros net/month) up to the submission of his/her thesis must also be specified.File to be sent to the doctoral school and then to the administrative officer.
