The Individual Monitoring Committee

Procedures
  • For 2024/2025 re-enrollments, the deadline for the CSI report is July 14th 2024. You will find opposite documents to download, such as the CSI full procedure as well as help sheets for the drafting of the report.

  • For further informations on the CSI, please consult the dedicated page of your doctoral school (see the "links" section opposite).

An Individual Monitoring Committee ensures the smooth running of the course based on the Doctoral Charter and the Training Agreement. In an interview with the PhD student, it assesses the conditions of his/her training and progress of his/her research. It makes recommendations and sends an interview report to the Director of the Doctoral school, the PhD Student and the Thesis Supervisor.
In particular, it endeavours to prevent any form of conflict, discrimination or harassment (Order of 25 May 2016).

The monitoring must ensure that the PhD student has a yearly meeting with teacher-researchers or researchers who are not involved in the thesis work. It enables an external assessment to make sure that the steps in development of the thesis work are consistent and that appropriate progress is being made.
The CSI discusses the issue of the PhD student’s general wellbeing and working environment.
It is essential that confidentiality is respected. However, the PhD student may specifically ask members of the CSI to bring up any problems in the presence of a third party (Laboratory Director, Doctoral School Director, etc.).

The CSI helps resolve possible conflicts arising between the PhD student and his/her environment. In this respect, a distinction must be made between serious problems and minor complaints. Minor conflicts are a regular occurrence in any work environment. Only problems that might hinder the progress of the thesis or affect the PhD student’s future career should be discussed.

As soon as the doctoral student encounters serious problems (conflict, harassment...), the University of Lorraine has set up an appeal system:
